AeroScout, the leading provider of Unified Asset Visibility for the healthcare industry, today announced that Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is realizing significant benefits from AeroScout's Wi-Fi RFID Asset Management and Temperature Monitoring solutions. Using AeroScout's Healthcare Real-Time Location System (http://www.aeroscout.com/content/technology) (RTLS (http://www.aeroscout.com/) ), the academic medical center is tracking and managing more than 2,500 assets throughout nine of its inpatient buildings, with plans to add another 1,000 items by year-end. In addition to equipment tracking, OHSU is wirelessly monitoring the temperature of refrigerators and freezers, as well as the ambient temperatures in many rooms and locations. The AeroScout solutions have had rapid payback periods for OHSU, while easing provider workload and enhancing care.

With roots dating back to 1887, Oregon Health & Science University provides leading-edge healthcare services to patients throughout Oregon and the entire Pacific Northwest. As Oregon's only academic medical center, OHSU cares for the hardest-to-treat patients and provides an extensive range of services from everyday healthcare needs to the most complex and highly sophisticated treatments and procedures.

"OHSU has been using AeroScout solutions for several years to improve efficiency and patient care and develop best practices," said Dennis Minsent, Director of Clinical Technology Services at Oregon Health & Science University. "Our asset tracking and management project had an estimated payback period of less than nine months. More importantly, AeroScout applications help staff find equipment more quickly and easily, providing them with additional time to care for patients. This helps OHSU maintain its high quality of care and has resulted in a very satisfied nursing group."

OHSU uses AeroScout Asset Management to quickly locate mobile medical equipment, such as infusion pumps, hospital beds and wheelchairs, throughout its facilities. The implementation utilizes OHSU's state-of-the-art Cisco Unified Wireless Network (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/) , avoiding the need to deploy and maintain a separate, proprietary network -- reducing complexity and total cost of ownership. Using the simple and intuitive AeroScout MobileView software, the academic medical center's staff can quickly find items instead of conducting physical searches. Ensuring that equipment is available when and where it is needed helps staff spend even more time treating patients and providing high quality care.

In addition to optimizing asset tracking (http://www.aeroscout.com/content/uav) and utilization, OHSU expanded its use of AeroScout's solutions to include Wi-Fi Temperature Monitoring (http://www.aeroscout.com/content/temperature-monitoring) . OHSU wirelessly tracks the temperatures in refrigerators and freezers that store pharmaceuticals, lab reagents, lab specimens, breast milk and food, and monitors the ambient temperatures in many rooms with temperature-sensitive clinical equipment and locations storing lab reagents. The solution automatically records the temperature of each refrigerator or room at regular intervals, alleviating the nursing, lab and pharmacy staff of the task of manually tracking temperature readings. Continuous monitoring allows OHSU to make optimal thermostat adjustments and identify refrigerators that may need to be replaced. The solution also alerts staff when temperatures deviate from pre-set ranges, enabling prompt action when necessary.

"Oregon Health & Science University is driving tremendous value for its clinicians and patients using AeroScout Healthcare Solutions," said Steffan Haithcox, Senior Director of Marketing at AeroScout. "Over the years, OHSU and AeroScout have teamed to develop best practices in healthcare asset tracking (http://www.aeroscout.com/content/asset-management) and management, as well as temperature monitoring (http://www.aeroscout.com/content/temperature-monitoring) , which have now propagated throughout the industry."
