NEW HAVEN, Ind. (AP) — Northeastern Indiana residents irritated for years by an aluminum smelting plant's emissions are now worried a proposed copper wire plant nearby will worsen the region's air quality.
New Haven resident Don Markley says he and his neighbors have for years endured the health impacts of emissions from OmniSource Superior Aluminum.
That plant is owned by Steel Dynamics Inc., which is the joint developer with Spanish firm La Farga Group of the new copper wire plant.
The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne reports (https://bit.ly/pZSgV6) that the proposed $39 million factory will use recycled copper to manufacture wire rods.
The plant's proposed permit would include allowing it to release a host of emissions that include 88 tons of soot and 68 tons of smog-forming chemicals.
