BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany has dropped an idea it was considering to levy a new tax on coal used in power generation, a government spokesman said on Wednesday.

"The coal tax was one of several alternatives but it won't be pursued," he said.

Germany had been mulling the new tax to help make up for revenue it would lose if it kept much-debated tax breaks for large corporate energy consumers, media reported earlier.
