RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- UPS Inc. said Friday it is raising prices in its freight unit by 6.9 percent for shipments throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The standard annual rate increase takes effect Aug. 1.

The impact may vary based on specific routes or shipment classifications, such as weight or class. UPS' freight unit moves heavier shipments like refrigerators.

UPS shares rose 19 cents to $73.12 in morning trading Friday.
