Dyfan Williams, a recent graduate of the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science, has won the prestigious AWE award.
His success was announced at the Science, Engineering and Technology Awards in a ceremony held at the Park Lane Hilton, London on September 3rd.
The SET Awards are Europe's most important awards for science and engineering undergraduates.
Dyfan won the award for his final year design project - detailed design of CO2 removal from Syngas by Methyl-diethanolamine (MDEA) - supervised by Dr David Cresswell.
This is an innovative CO2 removal unit capable of separating the bulk CO2 generated during the hydrogen production stage of an ammonia process.
Designing a novel flash system reduced the energy consumption by 75% compared to conventional absorption-stripping processes.
This award adds to an impressive list of achievements - Dyfan's high level of attainment has already been recognised by:
- The IChemE North West Branch Award for the best design project
- The Cargill Award for the best student in the MEng Chemical Engineering with Industrial Experience course
- A Shell Technical Scholarship
- Graduating with 1st class honours in MEng Chemical Engineering with Industrial Experience from the University of Manchester
Of his success Dyfan, who is currently working as a graduate process engineer at the Chevron Pembroke refinery, said: "I found the four-year course with a year in industry a great advantage.
"I enjoyed my time in Manchester - it prepared me well for my current job, and I am delighted to win this award".
Dr Flor Siperstein, who nominated Dyfan for this award, said: "Dyfan's design project went above and beyond of what we expected. He displays all the qualities needed to become a highly-successful engineer".
