Iowa Gov. Chet Culver says the state can turn to wind and solar energy to create jobs.
The Democrat is seeking a second term against challenger and former Republican governor Terry Branstad. Culver on Monday cited a proposed $12 million renewable energy training center in Newton as a way to meet his goal of doubling the 9,000 green jobs in Iowa.
Culver also says he would expand his $100 million, four-year Iowa Power Fund initiative, which is aimed at attracting alternative energy research and development in Iowa.
Branstad's campaign manager, Jeff Boeyink, says Culver hasn't made job creation a priority.
The Des Moines Register reports that of Iowa's nearly 1.5 million non-farm jobs, about 9,000 are green jobs.
