Whirlpool Project To Get Mich. Tax Incentives

Michigan Economic Growth Authority is expected to approve state tax incentives for a major building and consolidation project by Whirlpool in southwest Michigan.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Whirlpool Corp.'s plans for a major building and consolidation project in southwest Michigan has received a major boost with state tax incentives.

The Michigan Economic Growth Authority board on Tuesday approved a tax credit worth more than $19 million over five years for the appliance maker. Whirlpool last week announced plans for consolidating several owned and leased facilities to three campuses in and near Benton Harbor. The investments include a new building and could be worth close to $87 million while retaining nearly 870 jobs with the company.

A press release from Gov. Jennifer Granholm's office said competing sites for the Whirlpool project were in Illinois and Georgia.

The investment could help revitalize Benton Harbor, one of Michigan's most economically distressed cities.
