BMW Adding 500 Temp Workers At S.C. Plant

Automaker is adding 500 people to temporary work force at its South Carolina plant as demand for its cars increases, expanded facilities open and it begins production of a new X3.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- BMW says it is adding 500 people to its temporary work force as demand for its cars increases, expanded facilities open and it begins production of a new X3.

The U.S. plant for the German automaker said Thursday the hiring is part of the $750 million expansion plan it embarked on in 2008 that included expansion of its paint, body shop and assembly operations.

BMW president Josef Kerscher said the increased staffing levels are tied to sales of existing X5 and X6 models as well as the new X3 sports activity vehicle.

Hiring for the jobs is through MAU, which handles contract workers for BMW. Job fairs are planned during the next two weeks in Greenville and Spartanburg.
