MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — Google Inc. has signed a 20-year contract to buy power from an Iowa wind farm as part of the Internet search leader's effort to cut the pollution caused by its rising demand for energy.
The deal announced Tuesday kicks in July 30, with Google agreeing to pay a predetermined rate from the power provided by a NextEra Energy Resources wind farm with a capacity of 114 megawatts.
Financial terms of the contract weren't disclosed.
Google said the energy supplied by the wind farm will be enough to power several of the data centers that the Mountain View, Calif., company has built to help keep its search engine, e-mail and other online services running.
Google has been trying to rely on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power because it expects to keep drawing more power as it sets up even more computers to pursue its goal of indexing all the world's information.
Shares of Google rose $11.38, or 2.4 percent, to $477.56 in afternoon trading.
