WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio (AP) — Federal investigators say employees were working too close to a waste recycling area when vapors exploded last year at an Ohio solvent recycling plant.
Two workers were seriously injured in the explosion and fire at Veolia ES Technical Solutions near Dayton. The U.S. Chemical Safety Board concludes in its report that the injuries could have been avoided, but that the victims were working in a building less than 30 feet from the recycling area where flammable vapor was released.
Company officials say they support the board's recommendation for increased distance between processing areas and occupied buildings and that new construction is in the works.
They also say the company last year paid $75,000 in federal fines from the accident.
