WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate on Thursday killed legislation that would have prevented the Environmental Protection Agency from imposing carbon dioxide-reduction controls on large factories and electric power companies next year.

In a procedural vote, the Senate blocked the bill offered by Alaska Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski by a tally of 53 to 47.

The defeat could give new life to the effort to pass a broad energy and climate bill, a top goal of President Barack Obama's even before the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
