Nanmac Corp. recently held a ceremony to mark the turning on of its new solar array system. Solar panels on the facility's roof are intended to help trim down energy bills, but also contribute to greenhouse gas reduction. The company believes the solar array can generate enough power to supply 60 percent of the energy needed for its U.S. headquarters and manufacturing operations. Nanmac President Dan Nanigian presented a plaque to Governor Deval Patrick, thanking him for his support of Massachusetts manufacturing. The company is very involved with state-oriented agencies and programs, such as the Massachusetts Technology Callaborotive, the Massachusetts Export Center, the Massachusetts Office of Business Development, the Procurement Technical Assistance Center and the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development, all of which had a representatitive at the event. During the ceremony, Nanigian spoke of the last five years in the 50-year-old company's history as the most difficult but most rewarding, as it has risen above not only competition, but also materials, labor and energy costs, to grow more than 400 percent in exports. According to Nanmac, Massachusetts' programs made the economics work-and it is hoped that more companies will see that the benefits of solar power far outweigh the costs.
