CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia's new prime minister, Julia Gillard, could fail to win parliamentary approval for a much-anticipated compromise on the government's mining tax, after the Greens vowed on Monday to oppose any major backdown.
Gillard wants a quick deal with miners over the proposed 40 mining-profits tax in order to neutralize the issue at this year's general election, with reports saying she may cut the 40 percent rate and roughly double the tax-free threshold.
