HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) — An official says the cause of a fire at a chemical plant that forced the temporary evacuation of hundreds of people and sent huge plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky above Detroit is still unknown, but it appears to be accidental.
Hamtramck Fire Chief Steven Paruk says investigators are still trying to determine Friday what sparked the massive inferno at the Sterling Services Ltd. plant in Hamtramck that started about 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
Paruk said "everything is pointing that this is an accidental fire."
No injuries were reported.
Paruk said the Environmental Protection Agency finished its air quality testing and cleanup efforts continue.
Amtrak passenger rail service was suspended Thursday between Pontiac and Detroit, but the track later reopened.
