River, a management, consulting, and engineering services firm, has engineered a nine tank petroleum product expansion at the Kinder Morgan Terminal in Perth Amboy, NJ, an 80-acre facility with approximately 100 tanks and more than 2 million bbls of total storage capacity. The expansion provides additional product storage and movement capability and features a product manifold to transfer liquids from any tank to barges, tanks, and/or existing pipeline. Rivers scope includes preliminary design, AFE preparation and scope definition, and detailed design.

The new tanks each stand 60 feet tall and hold up to 1.3 million barrels of product with a barge loading and transfer capability of 7,500 to 10,000 bph. The project is being managed by Jack Cantwell, vice president and general manager, Pittsburgh. Cantwell says the greatest success of the project to date is safety. "Safety has been outstanding. We have multiple contractors working in close proximity, and have emphasized safety throughout the project."

The expansion, which was undertaken to provide capacity for storage and transfer, is slated for completion during this quarter. "The most challenging aspect has been the geotech, soil conditions, foundations, and piling requirements. The soil conditions varied throughout the site, and additional soil borings had to be taken throughout the site," explains Cantwell.

River, which has almost 30 years of experience in the petroleum and chemical industries and is headquartered in New Orleans, provides management, consulting, and engineering services from concept to reality. The company was recently recognized as one of the fastest growing engineering firms in the U.S. and Canada, as determined by ZweigWhite, the nations largest source of management consulting, information, and education for the design and construction industry.
