GALLIANO, Louisiana (Reuters) - A U.S. investigation will hold BP Plc accountable, "civilly and in whatever way is necessary", for the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill, senior U.S. officials said on Monday.

U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told reporters the U.S. government would keep its pressure on BP until it succeeds in plugging its leaking undersea well, cleaning up the huge spill from it and paying spill-related damages.

"We will keep our boot on their neck until the job gets done," Salazar said in a further sign of increased pressure by the Obama administration on the British-based company.
