SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Officials say a four-alarm fire at a meatpacking plant in South San Francisco is estimated to have caused more than $5 million in damage.

South San Francisco Fire Marshal Luis Da Silva says the cause of Thursday's blaze at the 40,000-square-foot Columbus Salame facility is under investigation.

About 10 or 15 maintenance evacuated the building when the fire started and no one was injured.

A company spokesman says the plant's employees will be paid through next week while the company figures out how to use them at other facilities in the Bay Area.
