Alex reaches hurricane strength in Gulf of Mexico

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Alex strengthened into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season on Tuesday as it swirled across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Alex strengthened into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season on Tuesday as it swirled across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

The Miami-based hurricane center said Alex, packing winds of about 75 miles per hour, was on track to make landfall near the Texas-Mexico border late on Wednesday or early Thursday.
