Fifty-four teams from 18 Colorado schools participated in today’s Junior Solar Sprint competitions hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
Teams used a solar cell and motor to design and build solar powered vehicles.
Trophies for the fastest solar standard powered model cars were given to Colorado students from Drake Middle School (Arvada), “Terminator,” first place; Southern Hills Middle School (Boulder), “Speed Demon” second place; and Woodlands Academy (Castle Rock), “Speedy McLightning”, third place. Three solar standard design trophies based on technology, craftsmanship and innovation were given to teams from Southern Hills Middle School (Boulder), “2112”, first place; Woodlands Academy (Castle Rock), “Woodlands 2”, second place; and Manhattan Middle School (Boulder), “Manhattan 1”, third place.
Three trophies for the fastest solar open division model cars were given to teams from Manning Middle School (Golden), “Power House”, first place; Bell Middle School (Golden), “The Punisher”, second place; and Woodlands Academy (Castle Rock), “Sunny the Swan”, third place. Three solar open division design trophies based on technology, craftsmanship and innovation were given to teams from St. Peter and Paul School (Wheat Ridge), “Dragon 7.0”, first place; Southern Hills Middle School (Boulder), “Nani/What?”, second place; and Woodlands Academy (Castle Rock), “Woodlands 1”, third place.
Students from Woodlands Academy (Castle Rock), “Solar Molar”, were awarded the Spirit Award for exhibiting good sportsmanship, including fairness and respectful behavior.
NREL's Junior Solar Sprint and Hydrogen Fuel Cell car competitions are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy’s Golden Field Office, Jefferson County Public Schools, Rocky Mountain Bottled Water, the Alliance for Sustainable Energy and NREL.
