JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — During their 2016 session, Mississippi lawmakers passed a tax cut, expanded the Jackson airport board and provided incentives for a tire manufacturing plant.
They phased out elected superintendents and created a statewide district to take over failing schools.
They enacted a law saying people can cite religious opposition to gay marriage to deny services to same-sex couples. It's bringing backlash from artists and others, but Republican Gov. Phil Bryant says critics are overreacting.
Legislators set a nearly $6.4 billion budget that trims most agencies' spending for the year beginning July 1.
On the list of things they didn't do: Provide new highway funding, enact campaign finance reform, redesign the state flag, add domestic violence as a reason for divorce or loosen the process for obtaining medical exemptions to childhood vaccinations.
