FRYEBURG, Maine (AP) — A group challenging a long-term contract that would allow Fryeburg water to be sold to Poland Spring bottled water company is asking the state's highest court to throw out the Public Utilities Commission's approval of the deal.
Fryeburg resident Bruce Taylor and the non-profit group Food and Water Watch are asking the state Supreme Judicial Court to reject the commission's approval of a long-term contract with Nestle Waters of North America, which owns Poland Spring.
The 25-to-45-year contract lets Poland Spring withdraw roughly 600,000 gallons of water a day from the town aquifer at the same basic rate as residents though it could pay a lower bulk rate.
The group's attorney told the court Tuesday that the Fryeburg Water Company's supply could be at risk.
