BERLIN (AP) — German technology group Linde AG says it is buying U.S. home care company American HomePatient, Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

Linde, which is active in gases and engineering, said Monday that the acquisition from Highland Capital Management LP is expected to close in the first quarter. The company will be integrated into Linde's U.S. subsidiary, Lincare.

American HomePatient, based in Brentwood, Tennessee, specializes in respiratory therapies for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, and obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA. It employs some 2,700 people in 38 states and is mainly active in the eastern U.S.

Linde says the purchase, which is subject to regulatory approval, will strengthen its U.S. growth and reinforce its position in health care.
