Siemens to support the development of mass transit in China - Propulsion technology for metro lines in Shanghai, Zhengzhou and Ningbo

The Siemens Mobility Division has received three orders from China for the supply of propulsion systems. A total of 93 new trains are to be equipped with propulsion technology and deployed on the Shanghai Metro Line 11, Zhengzhou Metro Line 1 and Ningbo Metro Line 1. The equipment package includes the gearboxes, auxiliary converter units, traction motors, traction converters and train control systems. This technology will ensure reliable and energy-saving metro operation and reduce the cost of maintenance. The metro trains will be built by the CSR Zhuzhou Electrical Locomotive Co., Ltd. (ZELC).
The cities in the People's Republic of China have more than 500 million inhabitants and are burdened more and more by traffic problems stemming from the sharp rise in the number of private motor vehicles. Consequently, the demand for solutions supporting the further development of urban rail transit is equally high. China is the most ambitious country in the world in terms of railway investment and plans over the next five years to expand its high-speed railway and mass transit networks from the present total of about 90,000 to 120,000 track kilometers.
The Chinese metropolis of Shanghai has already started the expansion of its mass transit system in order to keep pace with a current population of 19 million. For the South Extension of Metro Line 11, a new section of approximately 59 kilometers in length and with eleven metro stations is due to open from the end of 2012. Siemens Mobility is supplying drive systems for 46 trains. Line 11 will link the center of Shanghai with the new planned town district Lingang New City, which is currently being developed as a port district around 60 kilometers further south on the coast of the East China Sea for around 800,000 inhabitants.
With 8 million inhabitants, the city of Zhengzhou also wants to reduce the traffic load on its streets and is planning to set up a mass transit network comprising three east-west lines, two north-south lines and one circle line. By supplying the traction equipment for 25 trains for Metro Line 1, Siemens is making an important contribution to the development of the municipal metro system. Running on an east-west axis, this line will be the first rapid transit connection in Zhengzhou and serve 20 stations over a distance of approximately 26 kilometers. Line 1 is due to be inaugurated in 2013.
In Ningbo, the seaport city located in the Yangtze River Delta, Siemens Mobility will undertake a pioneering feat and participate in the construction of the first metro line. The section will be 21 kilometers long and will link the west and the east of the town. The Ningbo Line 1 will have 20 stops and is due to enter service as from 2014 initially with 22 metro trains, likewise equipped with drive systems made by Siemens.
To this day, Siemens has been able to establish a strong foothold in the rapid transit market in China and, in the past decade, has played an important role in the development and modernization of a suitable rail infrastructure. Siemens Mobility has succeeded in realizing a number of mass transit projects such as in Chongqing, Dalian, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Suzhou.
