Prius Remains Top Seller In Japan For 5th Month

Toyota's Prius hybrid topped the passenger car sales rankings in October in Japan, maintaining its top slot for the fifth consecutive month, industry bodies said.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Toyota Motor Corp.'s Prius hybrid topped the passenger car sales rankings in October in Japan, maintaining its top slot for the fifth consecutive month, industry bodies said Monday.

Honda Motor Co.'s Fit subcompact was second, while minicars made by Daihatsu Motor Co. and Suzuki Motor Corp. were third through fifth.

Minicars are vehicles with engines of up to 660 cc.

The Prius sold a total of 29,632 units, up 36.1 percent from a year earlier, and the Fit 22,352 units, up 59.3 percent.

Daihatsu's Mira placed third with sales of 19,918 units, up 213.5 percent. The company's Tanto ranked fourth with sales of 10,856 units, down 12.9 percent.

Suzuki's WagonR was in fifth place with sales of 10,589 units, down 30.2 percent.

The data are compiled by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Mini Vehicles Association.
