Singapore Airlines A380 Engine Shut Down In Flight

Singapore Airlines says it had to shut down an engine on an Airbus A380 flight to Europe and the plane has returned to Singapore.

SINGAPORE (AP) -- Singapore Airlines says it had to shut down an engine on an Airbus A380 flight to Europe and the plane has returned to Singapore.

The carrier said in a statement Tuesday that crew reported a surge in one of the four engines and that engine was shut down.

The airline said the early morning flight with 430 passengers turned back to the city-state about three hours into the flight. It landed safely in Singapore under the power of the three other engines.

The passengers were transferred to another plane heading to Frankfurt, Germany.

Singapore Airlines said it will investigate the cause of the malfunction with engine maker Rolls-Royce.
