Manufacturers Welcome Bipartisan Legislation to Delay Overreaching Boiler MACT Regulations
07/21/11 - National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Vice President of Energy and Resources Policy Chip Yost issued the following statement today in response to Senator Susan Collins’ (R-ME) and Senator Ron Wyden’s (D-OR) bipartisan legislation to stay the current Boiler MACT proposal:“Manufacturers are encouraged by the bipartisan legislation Senators Collins and Wyden have introduced. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Boiler MACT proposal is a costly and burdensome regulation that is unrealistic and threatens tens of thousands of jobs during a time of record unemployment.
This bipartisan measure would ensure that the rules are delayed for a defined period, extend the compliance period from three to five years and provide some certainty for job creators. It also affords the EPA adequate time to re-propose the rules and accept additional public comments. This will provide the time necessary to review, revise and craft a rule that is realistic and achievable.
Similar legislation has been introduced in the House of Representatives, demonstrating that elected officials are aware of and responsive to the business community’s concerns regarding the EPA’s regulatory agenda. By giving facilities more time to comply with these complex rules, it will not only save jobs but allow manufacturers to successfully compete in today’s global marketplace by investing in the future, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.”
