EPA Selects Cleanup Plan for Tittabawassee River Island (MI)

For Immediate Release
No. 11-OPA064

(CHICAGO – July 26, 2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Dow Chemical have signed an agreement on a cleanup plan for a small island in the Tittabawassee River. The clean up work, which will prevent contaminated sediment from eroding and moving downstream, will occur this fall.

The island is located near the intersection of M-47 and Weiss St., about 17 miles downstream from the confluence of the Chippewa and Tittabawassee rivers and about seven miles upstream from the Shiawassee River.

EPA’s plan was developed with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and presented for public comment this past spring.

A fact sheet outlining the island cleanup and information on EPA and MDEQ’s activities to address potentially contaminated areas along the Tittabawassee River, Saginaw River and Bay, may be found at www.epa.gov/region5/sites/dowchemical.
