Manufacturers: Ozone Standard Delay a Step in the Right Direction, but Uncertainty Looms and Jobs Remain at Risk
07/26/11 - National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President and CEO Jay Timmons issued this statement following the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) announcement that it will miss its July 29 deadline on proposed ozone standards:“Manufacturers hope today’s announcement is a sign that the Administration is listening to our concerns and will hold off on issuing this harsh, costly standard. By moving forward with raising the standards on ozone levels, the EPA is only adding economic turmoil to the nation’s struggling job market. Such aggressive and unattainable standards only hurt manufacturers’ ability to compete on a level playing field in the global marketplace.
Manufacturers remain very concerned about the Administration using its discretionary authority to impose these unrealistic standards that build uncertainty for job creators. The proposed ozone standard could result in millions of lost jobs and nearly $1 trillion per year in compliance costs.
During a time of record unemployment and economic uncertainty, manufacturers need policies that provide certainty and encourage investment, innovation, expanded operations, job creation and economic growth.
Manufacturers urge the White House and the EPA to abandon setting a new ozone standard before it is statutorily required and to thoroughly analyze the achievability and economic impact that other regulations will have on manufacturers and their ability to compete in today’s global marketplace.”
