Oregon Attorney General John Kroger says he has reached an agreement with a Florida-based manufacturer of electronic cigarettes to halt sales in Oregon.

Smoking Everywhere Inc. produces cigarettes with a battery-powered heating element and replaceable plastic cartridge that contains various chemicals, including liquid nicotine. The heating element vaporizes the liquid for inhalation.

Kroger said Smoking Everywhere did not seek U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval and provides no evidence to support claims that so-called "e-cigarettes" are a safe alternative to traditional tobacco products.

But Kroger noted a recent FDA analysis found e-cigarettes contain known carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as an ingredient used in antifreeze.

The agreement announced Monday includes an admission by the company that it violated Oregon's Unlawful Trade Practices Act.
