GE’s Technology Center celebrates Ten Years of Innovation in India

Bangalore, India. Thursday, September 16, 2010: GE’s Technology Center in Bangalore, India, the company’s first and largest integrated multidisciplinary Research and Product Development Center outside the US, today celebrates its tenth anniversary. Several of the key technologies that the Center worked on, will help launch products , such as high-density batteries, hybrid locomotives, thin-film solar and digital pathology over the coming months.

As part of GE’s ‘In India, For India” initiative, the company aims to improve quality of life, in areas such as Water, Energy and Healthcare by leveraging the technologies developed by it’s technology center in the country. Some of these technologies include zero-energy clean water solutions for rural markets, low wind regime turbines, high efficiency gas engines, biomass based power solutions and diagnostic computed tomography systems (CT) designed in India to provide better access to tier two and three cities.

Dr. Sanjay M. Correa, Vice President and Managing Director – GE India Technology Center said, “The Centre’s tenth anniversary is a significant milestone for GE. Over the years, we have grown a pool of strong technical talent across diverse industries. The Centre is an engine that will help drive GE’s growth both globally and in India. We continue to expand our supply chain in India, qualify vendors and build partnerships for manufacturing that will help address regional customer needs.”

Since 2001, GE’s annual research and development expenditures have nearly doubled from $2.3 billion to $4.4 billion in 2009. The Company has also doubled its investment in clean technologies from $700 million in 2005 to more than $1.5 billion in 2010. The funding has been directed towards new technologies that are a cornerstone of GE’s future growth plans.

The zero-discharge center also houses a Gold-LEED certified green building that can accommodate up to two thousand employees.
