Siemens to modernize switchgear manufacturing plant in Berlin at a cost of EUR100 million

Munich, Germany, 2010-Sep-16

Siemens is to convert its switchgear manufacturing plant in Berlin into one of the world's most modern production facilities of its kind. The company will invest approximately EUR100 million in the revamp between now and its completion in 2015. This is one of the highest amounts the Siemens Energy Sector has ever spent on upgrading one of its manufacturing plants. At the same time, the location is to be expanded into a center for global research and development in high-voltage switchgear engineering. On the production side, the plant will focus on especially innovative switchgear products. "This is a clear, long-term commitment to Berlin as an industrial and research location. Full-scale modernization will enable the plant to meet the challenges of the future as a flagship despite tough global competition" said Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of the Siemens Energy Sector and Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG.

Siemens switchgear manufacturing plant in Berlin

Siemens' switchgear factory in Berlin: Switchgear has to be one-hundred percent reliable. As a result, quality has to be perfect throughout the manufacturing process – from raw materials to the final production step.

The plan envisages construction of two entirely new factory shops, complete replacement of existing production lines on the premises, and improved logistics for short-distance access and movements. In that way the production facility is to be made fit for the European market, which is where most of the output will be delivered after the upgrade. The components manufactured at the plant are used for power grids, for example to connect and disconnect power plants.
