National Safety Council, Goodyear Partner to Make Ohio Roadways Safer

ITASCA, Ill., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The National Safety Council and Goodyear today announced their joint initiative to make Ohio roadways safer. Goodyear will offer free enrollment in the NSC Alive at 25 Parent Program to its first 1,000 customers with teens in the family who purchase a complete set of tires at an Akron-area Goodyear Auto Service Center, beginning Aug. 1, 2010.

The Alive at 25 Parent Program is a two-hour online course that educates parents about the risks teen drivers face. The engaging, science-based course teaches parents how to reinforce basic driving skills and good decision-making to help teens become safe, responsible drivers. Any customer who completes the course will receive a discount on automotive care services at an Akron-area Goodyear Retailer.

Motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens. An estimated 6,400 fatalities involved young drivers in 2008. For teens, the likelihood of being in a crash is highest in the first 12 months and 1,000 miles of driving. In an effort to address these statistics, NSC and Goodyear also will share driving safety tips with customers.

"NSC is pleased to work with Goodyear to provide their Akron-area customers with important education and safety tips to help reduce the number of teen driving crashes and fatalities on Ohio roadways," said David Teater, NSC senior director of Transportation Initiatives. "In 2008, an estimated 80 drivers ages 15-20 were killed in crashes in Ohio. Additionally, another 131 people (passengers, drivers and passengers of other vehicles) were killed as a result of these crashes. It is important for parents to get involved and prepare their teens for the driving risks they will experience. The NSC Alive at 25 Parent Program can help parents do just that."

The following Ohio Goodyear Auto Service Centers are participating in this special offer:

  • 3453 S. Arlington Rd. in Akron
  • 1800 Bucholzer Blvd. in Akron
  • 438 Summit Mall in Akron
  • 90 Graham Rd. in Cuyahoga Falls
  • 6850 Frank Ave. in North Canton
  • 4455 Kent Rd. in Stow
  • 145 Great Oaks Trail in Wadsworth

The National Safety Council (www.nsc.org) saves lives by preventing injuries and deaths at work, in homes and communities, and on the roads through leadership, research, education and advocacy.
