Today in 1867 Augustin Daly’s play “Under the Gaslight,” was produced for the first time at the New York Theater. It was a tremendous hit, figured in Theodore Dreiser’s “Sister Carrie,” and deserves its place in American history for having created (or at least brought from England) that staple of melodrama, the villain tying a victim to railroad tracks.

Gaslights? Railroads? That’s enough manufacturing right there to justify a Friday Factory Tune tribute, one featuring the industrial-strength voice of The Muffs’ Kim Shattuck. The cartoon by Tom Neely is super melodramatic, while the Muffs, dramatic but not mellow at all.

Kim doesn’t shout “WOWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!” as much as she did back in the “Lucky Guy” days, but the Muffs are still masters of guitar-driven power pop with humor and hooks. Drew Carey likes them, another sign of their virtues.
