Paul Wurth will build and install ArcelorMittal Monlevade's second blast furnace in Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil . Civil works will begin in September this year, with the 1.12 million tpy furnace and auxiliary plants expected to come on stream in May 2012, ArcelorMittal Brasil said in a statement.

The furnace is part of Monlevade's $1.2 billion expansion project which will double its crude steel capacity to 2.4 million tpy from the current 1.2 million tpy.

ArcelorMittal Brasil has not disclosed the value of the contract with Paul Wurth.

Besides the 1.12 million tpy BF, Monlevade will also receive a 2.3 million tpy sinter plant and a third rolling mill which will have capacity to produce 1.15 million tpy of wire rod (MB, 1 June).

Billet production capacity will reach 2.4 million tpy, while wire rod capacity will reach 2.3 million tpy.

Located in the city of João Monlevade , the Monlevade plant is the only integrated long steel works of ArcelorMittal Brasil.
