Saudi Basic Industries Corp. says net profit in the third quarter surged 46 percent compared with the same period in 2009.

Sabic is one of the world's biggest chemical companies and is the biggest petrochemical manufacturer in the Middle East.

The company said Sunday that rising demand for its products and an increase in prices for finished products boosted income.

Net income for the third quarter was 5.33 billion riyals ($1.42 billion) compared with 3.65 billion riyals in the same quarter last year.

Sabic's shares closed at 89 riyals on the Saudi exchange, a gain of 2.3 percent on the day.

The company said increased production and demand boosted income, as did an improvement in prices for plastics and petrochemical products.
