Kemin Industries Inc., a nutritional ingredient manufacturer, is planning a $30 million expansion at its headquarters in Des Moines.

The company on Tuesday announced a five-year expansion plan that includes six new manufacturing buildings, three new research facilities and a new corporate headquarters at its campus on the city's southeast side. The project will include the purchase of city-owned land.

President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Nelson says the expansion will create about 100 jobs in research and development, finance and marketing.

Kemin now has about 320 employees in Des Moines.

Nelson says the company was out of space in Des Moines but decided to expand, in part because of a research and development tax credit approved by the Legislature made the city competitive with foreign sites.
