Progress Software Corporation (http://www.progress.com/index.ssp) (NASDAQ: PRGS), a leading software provider that enables enterprises to be operationally responsive, introduced today Progress@ OpenEdge@ BPM, a new strategic initiative that delivers Progress' independent software vendor (ISV) partners and customers with new capabilities for building applications that provide continuous business process improvements. The Progress OpenEdge BPM initiative achieves this by integrating business process modeling, monitoring and management capabilities of its industry-leading Progress Savvion BPM product with the high-performance business application platform, Progress OpenEdge. OpenEdge BPM is a revolutionary initiative because it provides the first platform to enable the complete development of robust business process applications for both on-premise and cloud deployment environments.

Progress Software created this strategic initiative in response to two main market drivers: (a) the growing market demand for a single platform that enables the complete development of business process applications; and (b) enthusiasm from Progress ISV partners and midmarket customers for more dynamic visibility into their business processes for applications built with the OpenEdge product.

Pam Lopker, a founding member of the Progress OpenEdge BPM Advisory Council and President and Chairman for QAD, a leading provider of enterprise applications for global manufacturing companies, said: "We are very excited by this strategic initiative that brings BPM capabilities to the existing OpenEdge business application development platform. We believe that as this technology emerges we will be able to harness process and rules functionality to deliver new capabilities within QAD Enterprise Applications, supporting our goal of rapid deployment and easy support, whether on-premise, or on-demand."

Today's developers require well-integrated tools that provide a rich environment for modeling processes and quickly deploying them, as well as being able to rapidly and cost-effectively make application and process changes in response to changing business rules. The OpenEdge BPM initiative represents the industry's first opportunity to integrate business process management with application development and deployment, enabling the creation of true business process applications.

Rob Levy, Chief Product Officer, Progress Software said: "In order to remain competitive, an enterprise first needs to automate the processes that drive the business and easily connect those processes to the applications that drive the business. These enterprises also need to be able to adjust and modify those processes based on rapidly changing needs. While the days of simply writing processes on the back of napkins, or documenting them in text documents are long gone, our ISV partners and customers are still finding that other BPM suites simply are not effective because they don't provide an integrated application development platform."

Levy continued: "Beyond the productivity and performance benefits that come with integrating these two types of platforms together, the Progress OpenEdge BPM initiative will also provide an immediate opportunity to reduce total cost of ownership by significantly simplifying the management and operation of business process applications."

"This is a significant first for the market," added Levy. "Applications built with continuous business process improvements in mind will drive new levels of efficiency and empower our partners to ultimately deliver to end-users entirely new capabilities."

In 2010, for the fifth consecutive year, IDC ranked the Progress OpenEdge business application development platform as the number one pure-play embedded database management system (DBMS) in the world. Similarly, Forrester Research, Inc. named Progress Savvion BPM a leader among BPM suites in "The Forrester Wave: Business Process Management Suites, Q3 2010" (August 2010).
