Elan Names New Chief Medical Officer

Irish drugmaker said Dr. Eliseo Oreste Salinas will serve as company executive vice president and chief medical officer, effective immediately.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Irish drugmaker Elan Corp. said Tuesday Dr. Eliseo Oreste Salinas will serve as company executive vice president and chief medical officer, effective immediately.

Salinas will be based at Elan's South San Francisco location and will lead the company's global development, clinical and medical initiatives.

CEO Kelly Martin said in a company statement the move reflects Elan's push "to become a world-class leader in novel therapeutics for patients who are afflicted with serious neurodegenerative diseases."

The company said Dr. Menghis Bairu, chief medical officer and head of development, will resume his main role as executive vice president and general manager overseeing the multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri.

Salinas joined Elan from Adolor Corp., where he served as senior vice president of research and development and chief medical officer. Salinas also has served as chief scientific officer and executive vice president of global pharmaceutical research and development for Shire Inc.
