Wolverine World Wide Adding Jobs In Michigan

Shoe maker is adding at least 70 jobs at a Big Rapids factory that makes Bates footwear worn by uniformed military and police personnel.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Wolverine World Wide Inc. is adding at least 70 jobs at a Big Rapids factory that makes Bates footwear worn by uniformed military and police personnel.

The Rockford company made the announcement on Monday.

The Michigan Economic Development Corp. recently approved a $2.5 million tax credit for the expansion. WOOD-TV reports that Wolverine had promised to eventually create 286 jobs to receive the tax credit.

Wolverine officials announced in July that the Rockford-based company was closing its Bates plant in Jonesboro, Ark., and shifting production to Big Rapids, about 50 miles north of Grand Rapids.

They said at the time the Jonesboro factory was closing in six to nine months, putting 270 people out of work.
