China Says 60 Arrested In Tainted Milk Scandal

Previously, authorities announced 42 arrests, but the government says police arrested 60 people last year in relation to the scandal and 21 of those suspects have been prosecuted.

BEIJING (AP) -- The Ministry of Public Security says police arrested 60 people last year in relation to China's tainted milk scandal.

The ministry's Web site said Friday 21 of those suspects have been prosecuted in Hebei province, home of Sanlu Group Co., the dairy at the heart of the scandal.

Previously authorities announced 42 arrests.

Tian Wenhua, the former board chairwoman and general manager of Sanlu, and three other top executives have been tried for their role in the milk contamination. Verdicts have not yet been announced.

At least six babies died and nearly 300,000 were sickened by infant formula tainted with the industrial chemical melamine. Nitrogen-rich melamine was mixed into watered-down milk to fool quality tests for protein content.
