September Manufacturing Tech Consumption Rises

Total rose 21.7 percent from August and 2.9 percent from September; the Midwest saw the biggest jump, rising 79.8 percent from August.

McLEAN, Va. — September U.S. manufacturing technology consumption reached $438.95 million, according to the Association For Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association (AMTDA).
 
The total was up 21.7 percent from August and up 2.9 percent from September 2006.
 
“Evidence that manufacturing is alive and well in the U.S. can be seen in September’s extraordinary surge in manufacturing technology orders,” said John B. Byrd III, AMT President.
 
By region, the Northeast totaled $46.26 million, down 8.9 percent from August and down 21.8 percent from September 2006. The year-to-date total of $470.54 million was 10.9 percent higher than 2006.
 
The South reached $49.86 million, up 6.3 percent from August and up 19.4 percent from September 2006. The year-to-date total of $401.86 million was 6.5 percent higher than 2006.
 
In the Midwest, technology consumption totaled $206.04 million, up 79.8 percent over August and up 46.7 percent over September 2006. At $974.16 million, the year-to-date total was 8.7 percent higher than 2006.
 
The Central region’s technology consumption reached $97.48 million, down 3 percent from August and down 20.5 percent from September 2006. The year-to-date total of $811.76 million was 8.6 percent higher than the 2006 level.
 
In the West, technology consumption totaled $39.31 million, down 17.9 percent from August and down 37 percent from September 2006. The year-to-date total of $418.34 million was 4.4 percent less than the 2006 level.
