According to The Vancouver Sun, Americans are likely regularly consuming feces in their food. Microbiologist Michael Doyle says imported food from developing countries often contains fecal matter, especially seafood and fresh produce. Doyle says food produces in China often use human and animal waste– untreated– for feeding their farmed fish and for fertilizing the land. The most frightening part: Currently, only about 1 percent or less of imported food is physically inspected. The recently passed Food Safety Modernization Act aims to improve that number, but it remains to be seen whether the Food and Drug Administration can obtain the funds to successfully implement more frequent inspections for imported food products.
