DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The lawyer for a bankruptcy trustee of an embattled kosher slaughterhouse says the company is unlikely to pay fines to Iowa's labor agency.
Iowa Workforce Development last week agreed to slash proposed fines by $9 million against Agriprocessors, Inc. for allegedly making illegal deductions from employee paychecks.
Dan Childers, an attorney for Agriprocessors' bankruptcy trustee, says the company is unlikely to make the payments because the government fines are accorded a lower priority than some of the company's other debts.
Childers says the fines will be paid out of any money the trustee can recover from payments the company made before it declared bankruptcy.
Agriprocessors was the site of a major immigration raid in 2008.
