Italy's largest utility, through its subsidiary Enel North America Inc., announced Friday plans to construct a wind farm in Smoky Hills, Kan., with a 250 megawatt (MW) capacity, and a 27 MW wind farm in Newfoundland, Canada, as part of its $5.2 investment in renewable energy.
The plants' production will result in the reduction of carbon emissions by 415,500 tons per year.
For the Smoky Hills facility, the first phase, representing 100.8 MW, will be operating by the end of 2007.
Sunflower Electric Power Corp. and the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities have agreements to buy power from the Smoky Hills plant through a partnership between Enel North America and Tradewind Energy LLC.
In Canada, New Wind Group Inc., controlled by Enel North America, will supply 27 MW of power to Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.
The St. Lawrence facility is expected to be operational by the end of 2008 and will produce about 100,000 MW annually.
