Thirteen Koppers U.S. locations have been honored by the National Safety Council (NSC) with Occupational Excellence Achievement Awards for 2005. Koppers is a global integrated producer of carbon compounds and treated wood products.
In earning the NSC awards, the 13 plants reported injuries and illnesses involving days away from work at a rate in 2005 that was 50% or less of the rate for their respective industry classifications, as determined by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. These 13 plants also experienced no fatalities. The Koppers plants that won the awards are located in Montgomery, AL; Woodward, AL; North Little Rock, AR; Denver, CO; Gainesville, FL; Galesburg, IL; Portland, OR; Clairton, PA; Muncy, PA; Florence, SC; Roanoke, VA; Superior, WI; and Follansbee, WV. "The well-being of our employees is the motivation behind our existing safety policies and the enhanced initiatives and precautions we implemented in our plants in 2005," said Leslie S. Hyde, vice president, Safety and Environmental Affairs. "This continued emphasis on safety and health is clearly paying dividends at Koppers. We realize our most valuable asset is our employees.
