Large scale demonstrations with co-firing kraft lignin and coal have been carried out in the combined heat and power plant (CHP) in Värtan Power Station during 2007 and 2008. The lignin for the demonstration was produced from black liquor in the LignoBoost demo plant in Bäckhammar which is operated by Innventia (former STFI-Packforsk). The demonstrations confirmed that lignin will be a suitable fuel for co-firing with coal up to 30-35 % in Fortum's CHP plant in Värtan. The work was part of a R&D Programme (Future Resource Adapted Pulp Mill FRAM2) coordinated by Innventia (Per Tomani, Programme Director) and co-financed by AGA Linde, Eon, Fortum Värme, Korsnäs-Frövi, Nordic Paper, Stora Enso, Swedish Energy Agency, Södra Cell, Weyerhaeuser, ÅF Process and Ångpanneföreningen's Foundation for Research and Development.
