LIMERICK, Pa. (AP) — The company that operates a southeastern Pennsylvania nuclear plant says it may decide within a year to shut down some of its 11 nuclear power stations if a way to make them profitable can't be found.
Exelon Corp., parent company of Limerick Generating Station owner Exelon Nuclear, says it has no current shutdown plans beyond one New Jersey plant slated to close in 2019.
But company spokesman Dana Melia told The (Pottstown) Mercury (http://bit.ly/1b29eEs ) that low power prices and current energy policies are posing an economic challenge for several units. He said if no long-term path to profitability can be found, all options — including shutdown — will be considered.
Limerick is seeking a 20-year license renewal, and Melia said the plant "continues to be a very strong performer."
