Walnut to Get Air Liquide Biogas Purification Plant

Air Liquide plans to build and operate a landfill gas-to-renewable natural gas purification plant that will enable the conversion of the methane emitted by waste into a renewable energy capable of heating about 4,500 homes per year.

WALNUT, Miss. (AP) — Air Liquide plans to build and operate a landfill gas-to-renewable natural gas purification plant that will enable the conversion of the methane emitted by waste into a renewable energy capable of heating about 4,500 homes per year.

"The new biogas project will enable us to transform waste and unused energy resources into renewable, carbon-reducing energy for the community and surrounding cities," said Chet Benham, vice president of Air Liquide Advanced Technologies U.S. LLC. "Air Liquide is actively working to continue our growth in biogas purification plants in the U.S., and to provide clean energy for sustainable communities."

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports Paris, France-based Air Liquide will build and operate its first LFG-to-RNG purification plant in the U.S. at the Northeast Mississippi Landfill owned by the Northeast Mississippi Solid Waste Management Authority. It is operated by national solid waste company Waste Connections Inc. and receives approximately 350,000 tons of waste per year.

Air Liquide also will build a four-mile pipeline that will feed the biogas into a natural gas pipeline in the area. Construction of the pipeline will also enable the town to expand its utility services.

Officials expect to break ground on the project in the first quarter of 2017. An unspecified number of construction jobs and plant jobs will be created, the company said.
