Coal power plant will be the first built in Bulgaria in 20 years.

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — French power and engineering company Alstom SA said Monday it won a contract worth more than euro700 million with U.S. energy company AES Corp. to build a 670 megawatt coal power plant in Bulgaria.

The contract covers engineering, procurement, construction and in-house manufacturing of the main equipment for the Maritza East 1 lignite-fired power plant, located near the town of Galabovo in southeastern Bulgaria, Alstom said in a statement.

Maritza East 1 will be the first large-scale power project to be built in Bulgaria for the last twenty years and is planned to start commercial operation in 2009. The plant will achieve emissions levels below those required by the European Union Large Combustion Plant Directive.
