BorgWarner, EPA Announce Partnership

Auto parts supplier BorgWarner Inc. and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have announced a partnership to new develop diesel technology.

Auto parts supplier BorgWarner Inc. and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have announced a partnership to develop new diesel technology. The ultimate goal through this partnership will be to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil.

The partnership will focus on clean combustion systems instead of using expensive treatments that affect emissions after they leave the vehicle's combustion chamber. This technology will help diesel-based vehicles meet the EPA's Tier 2 clean air standards, which are being phased into passenger vehicles through 2009.

In October of this year, U.S. diesel retailers will be required to sell low-sulfur fuel. The new fuel regulations will cut smog-forming pollutants by 90% on new trucks and buses, according to EPA Administrator, Stephen Johnson.

Financial terms of the partnership have not been disclosed.
